Trivium/ Devildriver/ After the Burial/ Hydra Kyll @Fillmore Silver Spring 10/2/2013

I went to see Trivium and Devildriver at the Fillmore, Silver Spring. Met up my buddy Josh, and also Scott, Iri, Julius, ChrisWolf, Jen P, Bridget, Ariel y su mujer, su amigo Jose, and met some new friends- Patty, her friend, Cooley, and the most badass bouncer.

So I got there, met up with Josh and heard most of Hydra Kyll. I think they did well, especially for an opportunity like this. They are a local band from around Olney, MD, some sort of melodic death metal. They had a couple rough spots, but by the end the drums and guitars (solos in particular) were very solid. The vocals could have used some work, IMO.

There were a few hundred people there, by no means sold out, but comfortably crowded. Trivium had several shirts, a hoodie, and some other merch. Their shirts were reasonably priced (25). Devildriver also had several shirts ($20), including one with old school art Jesus and a devil with some obscenity on the back (man I need to write these sooner).

At this point, we migrated downstairs to hang w/ Iri and her crew. I don't know if we should have stayed around for After the Burial, if it would have been another Pentagram moment or not- but we didn't. We talked with who must have been the coolest bouncer ever- he had in some sort of altercation that he not only got sliced, but shot AND set on fire. Jesus H Christ, talk about a trouper.

ANYWAYS, so we made it back upstairs in time to see Dez and Devildriver. The crowd went pretty apeshit for them. I could not really distinguish a lot of their songs, but they sounded pretty great. They did a couple new songs that... sounded like Devildriver songs, so that was pretty nice. They were aggressive, heavy, and full of energy- there were pretty constant pits and movement from the crowd. At one point Dez demanded crowdsurfers, and the number of them doubled or tripled. These guys are really over with the heavy music crowd it seems O_O; I nearly got caught in a mosh more than a few times. Dez was the focal point for pretty much the entire show. The rest of the band was there, in plain black shirts and pants, not too much going on with them- it seems like it is HIS band. They had some 'Awolnation' cover that seemed a bit out of place, but it still sounded pretty good. They seemed like they were on for a while, but only had 45 minutes. I'm not sure if it was not being able to recognize songs apart from the last 4 or 5 that made it seem longer, or what.

Trivium eventually came on a bit later, and  were pretty thunderous. Something about their sound seemed to not be as good as the other two times I've seen them (Mayhem fest and Rams Head). I am not exactly sure what it was, being too close, or something not quite translating live (somehow). Their technical ability was certainly on display, but something about it seemed a bit unsure, maybe that detracted from their headline status.  Or maybe it was not being super familiar with their first couple of albums. Whatever the case, they sounded good, but I think Devildriver really gave them a run for their money with the outstanding energy that they had. Their guitars were pretty heavy, but the vocals were a bit muffled.  I did enjoy hearing the new songs from their solid new album (not available at the time of the show, but now as I write it, its streaming!) , and some songs from their last killer album.  my favourites were def 'In Waves', 'Strife', and 'Watch the world Burn.' I can feel the hate now for not being 100% into older Trivium songs!  I think these guys will continue to get bigger, and who knows what that will bring, especially with many parallels to Metallica (let's just hope they don't do a Load or ReLoad). They did have a kind of short headline set, but that seems the norm, unfortunately, with package tours like this these days :/

Overall, it was a pretty fun show, and got to hang with friends, old and new. I don't know if I really regret missing After the Burial, but I suppose it would have been nice to have heard one song uninterrupted.
