I went to see the Kix band @ Ram's Head Live 9/22/2012. I met up with Tony, his cousin, and his moms and pops. Almost a whole family affair. I've been to a couple shows with them plus his brother, another couple cousins and uncles. Talk about bonding experience.

Behemoth @ Ram's Head Live - 5/5/2012
Behemoth and Watain (and some other bands too but we got there after they got off stage) came to Ram's Head Live in Baltimore. I would have liked to hear the retro Devil's Blood, but it was fine- better not to rush rush.
We were putting on corpsepaint, which was fun. However, I noticed that NO ONE else was sporting any paint. Which, after see Turisas where a good number of people had facepaint. The actual bands were the only ones with paint besides us LOLZ. I opted for a variation on Immortal (with some Zartan looking eye makeup), Milla went for a Behemoth look, and Kate had some crazy stuff.
After we finished applying corpsepaint, we went to the venue, got patted down, and entered. Watain's roadies brought in a bunch of candles/candlesticks/etc. and we knew they would start soon. A pretty good crowd for Behemoth- the floor was pretty crowded. Balcony was not open tho. Chicken suit guy was there too. Some people around us remarked that he should have something more metal than a chicken suit.
Watain came on (I was not very familiar with any of their songs, apart from a bunch of yubtub listens in the background) to some mood setting strings. They were pretty energetic and definitely entertaining, but ultimately unintelligible. The crowd seemed pretty pumped for them. The bass player in particular was very animated and GRIM.The vocalist seemed to have some sort of what looked like a dead bird strapped to the back of his vest. Not sure tho.
Behemoth came on a bit after- to a very enthusiastic crowd. Their sound was like as it should be- Heavy Metal Thunder \m/ Nergal vox were, as expected, a bit muddy- but the power of everything together made that perfectly fine. The lights were pretty well done- except for the strobe lights (see below). The band was pretty tight and no one screwed anything up as far as I could tell
Crowd was a bit rowdy at times, until the wheelchair guy entered the pit. He was also hoisted up at a couple points. Wow. I did not like the combination of a wheelchair that can run people over, a couple shorter people in the pit, and strobe lights blinding me combination. I did not get run over, so that was good. There were a couple parts that I thought would be played live, but they were piped in. Odd. Behemoth only played about an hour. That was a bit disappointing, but I think Nergal's still not feeling fully 100%, so that makes sense.
Note: Pretty much all songs I got from selist reports from other places- I had no idea any of Watain's songs names, but why would they play anything different?

Slash @ Ram's Head Live 5/3/2012
Slash (featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators *whew*) came to
RAM's Head Live for the first stop on his Apocalyptic Love tour to a
sold out show. I had to stand near the back. Slash had a bunch of merch -
Bandana (15), LIVE CD/DVD (30), shirts for the new album (35), a few
other things I don't recall.
Brand New Sin opened. They had a different singer than the last time I saw them (back opening for Black Label Society in like...2001 or something). They played their one song I recognized (My World), and some other songs that sounded more like Black Stone Cherry. Their old singer was way better than this guy. They just seemed a bit generic. They are at about the same level as they were about 10 years ago. Maybe lower. Not bad, but not great. An OK opener.
(may update later w/ a setlist for them as I'm waiting for my car to be serviced)
Slash came on around 9:45 and played until about 11:30. They had a bunch of dynamic lighting, but not much of a theatric show beyond that. But they didn't really need one, I thought. Slash was jumping around a bit near the beginning, and the bass player and Myles were pretty energetic. Soundwise, they were great- at least from where I was standing. Solid, the sound was very similar to that 'Made in Stoke' release that Slash put out recently - very close if not spot on to what their live sound was. Myles may suffer a little from 'everything in the same tone/drone syndrome' and sometimes lyrics were a bit hard to distinguish, but that's how he sounded on that live album too. Regardless, I thought he did a very good job.
People were NOT very responsive during most songs. They were cheering and hootin' and hollering after each song, tho- so they must have been enjoying it. The biggest reactions were for the GNR songs and (I thought surprisingly) a couple of the Velvet Revolver songs that I was pretty unfamiliar with. I just thought it was odd that most people were mostly motionless except for a few people jumping up and down and a small group of people near the front pumping fists and the like. I noticed a couple other headbangers, but I felt like I was the only one really moving. This whole feeling was similar to the Within Temptation show I went to last year... Well to each his own.
There were a couple of songs that I thought I had taken better notes on- but apparently I just have question marks.
Highly recommended. A bit pricey (~$40 US dollars), but if you like Slash's solo stuff, GNR, Velvet Revolver, or some combination then I have to say you will enjoy this show. I thought the Velvet Revolver stuff sounded better here than on the albums, but still overrated. We got a couple new songs- they sounded pretty good. Not great, but not horrible. Pretty cool. I left as Paradise City (when suddenly... confetti... shot out from the stage) was winding down...to have to jump start my car. Buzzkill.
No Pits were seen.

Black Dahlia Murder @ Ram's Head Live - 4/17/2012
Milla and I went to see The Black Dahlia Murder (and met John and Kate) at Ram's Head Live. The crowd was pretty good, but not so many people as to have the balcony opened, apparently. John and Kate said the opening band was pretty good. I didn't look into them.
We left late and got there right as Skeletonwitch was starting. We missed a couple songs. They sounded a bit clearer this time, I thought, as I was actually able to make out what the vocalist was saying (well in between songs anyways). They were still a little muddy, but overall better than last time. I thought it was funny that the vocalist had a spike bracer on one arm, and one of the guitarists had a spike bracer on his *other* arm. Like they could not afford another set of bracers :3
Nile, whom I was rather interested in hearing/seeing, but curious as to how the extremely heavy sound they have (and somewhat slower pace as well) would translate from album to live. They were VERY heavy (good), and the guitar work was pretty sweet. However, during a couple songs, the slower paced ones, it made me feel sluggish or sleepy :/ I think I'd see them again. Would need to prepare myself for a longer, headlining set. The vocals were a bit muffled, but the drums that sounded like thunder and guitar were rather clear and damngood. Their more Egyptian sounding songs were the highlights of their sets. You really don't hear stuff like that. The crowd was more into Nile than Skeletonwitch.
Finally, The Black Dahlia Murder came on and people were rather responsive to their brand of madman metal. (metalcore? extreme black metal w/ something else? I dunno what one calls it) Their vocals were a mess sometimes and I thought their guitars needed to be turned up a bit more (so we could hear the dual leads), but the double bass blasts were perfect. Overall, thy were very tight and def seemed worthy of being the headliner. Could have used a bit more theatrics maybe.
The crowd was way rowdy by the time BDM came on, so that was a bit of a hassle- a few people were a bit lousy with their pit etiquette and having some sort of grudes/vendettas going on. I do NOT need that drama... One guy kept on trying to knock down this one rather strong fellow. He fell down/got knocked down about 12 or so times. A bigger guy in a Steelers Jersey was very annoying too, because with a guy that big there is nothing I can do but go along with the flow. He got taken down more than a few times. I saw him with ice at one point. He seemed to be an instigator.
Got a bit bumped around, as we were on the edge of the pit (like always it seems). An elbow to the stomach, almost fell over twice (but I grabbed onto the perpetrator and righted myself). I enjoyed their songs, but I think I was expecting a bit cleaner sound from them for some reason.
Merch was mostly meh. BDM had a shirt with an ape on it, but it was a bit too sporty for me. Skeletonwitch had a simple shirt w/ logo...that was 10 bucks. SO I was first in line at the merch booth and snagged that shirt and a couple photos with the vocalist. Sweet. Saw that guy Scott at this show too. Didn't talk with him.
(I assume setlist of BDM is accurate, cause I only recalled a few songs by name)

VNV Nation @ Ram's head Live 3/12/2012
Went to see VNV Nation on 3/12/2012 at Ram's Head Live with John and Kate. I was not sure about going to this show as Iced Earth is/was the next day... but I did end up rolling up. We got there about 7:45 and thought we were missing part of Straftanz, but they went on at 8PM instead of the advertized 7:30PM. Good! So we had a couple happy hours.
Straftanz was, like last time, energetic and enjoyable. They had a unicorn toy that I do not recall them having last time that they displayed prominently during one song. I think they had the same setlist
VNV Nation was similar to their last show- very positive and surprisingly high energy for a fat man. It was loud, but not so loud that I needed earplugs. They played a slightly different setlist than in December, so that was fun. It seemed maybe extended, but maybe the 'extended live set' that was purported didn't seem that extended. Oh well.
There was a smallish crowd (no balconies opened, but the floor was decently filled- if everyone was there you could fit everyone on the main floor and still have decent 'personal space'). Some cute girls, some not, some glowsticks, a lot of people wearing black (duh). Was a good concert overall.

Children of Bodom @ Ram's head Live 3/4/2012
3/4/2012 Milla n I saw Children of Bodom live @ Ram's head Live. Revocation and Eluveitie opened for them. We got there and Revocation had been playing for a little bit. We used the restroom and then checked out the merch tables. It was pretty crowded, people on balconies, filling up the main floor. Saw Dorothy and that guy with really long hair (Scott) here- both of which were at the Deicide show (and later at the Iced Earth show- coming soon). I think there was another band before Revocation but we didn't care about them/showed up after they finished. Merchandise they had was kinda meh, and I was not impressed with the COB shirts. Bought an Eluveitie shirt for Milla and their new CD.
We watched the last half of Revocation from the merch table. They were alright. I didn't think they were that great. Not bad, but not worth getting worked up over. Best part was when the front man was talking about one song that was about Valhalla or something similar (allegedly). He then proceeded to growl "ITS LIKE SKYRIM...but the DRAGONS have TITS!" Hilarious. Setlist is a guess from other sets reported on the tour.
Revocation photo
Eluveitie came on next with about 12 people on stage. Very interesting to see and hear the different folk instruments...except that the drums were too loud and drowned out the flutes and hurdy gurdy and whatever else they were using more often than not. I still thought they were good. The crowd was pretty receptive, but unsure of moshing to folk metal for some reason. Milla was way more familiar with their stuff and enjoyed their set a bit more. I took the setlist from metalsetlists.com as I could not tell you what songs they played except for that Zelda song (Epona..well makes me think of Zelda). There was totally an all girl pit at one point for them or for COB (can't recall)
Eluveitie photos
Children of Bodom finally came on after we secured a place near the middle of the back. Over the show we steadily were pushed back and ended up at the back of the right side, near the ramp (what a bad place). Children of Bodom sounded great, and may have been better than the last time I saw them. Pulling out some old favourites that I don't think I've heard them do live before (Kissing...) was excellent. Alexi sounded a bit more precise this time as well, which helped his guitar playing. Near the end of the set, Eluveitie came out and set up a table with a mixer, some liquor and were making some manner of shots and/or mixed drinks for COB. A really good setlist, I could have done with BODOM BEACH TERROR, but what can you do?

Last band of the night, CHILDREN OF BODOM!!!!!! This was now my 8th times seeing them live, and as I've always said, they never disappoint live. For the longest time everytime I've seen them, nothing ever topped the first time I saw them in 2006 at the Kool Haus headlining for Are You Dead Yet? But after last night, I think we have a new best Bodom show. They just played the show of their lives and the setlist for this tour is just amazing Plus they played 2 song I have never seen live before. Bodom = AWESOME
